Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion cut into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan optional
  • neutral cooking spray for coating

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Three shallow bowls
  • Tongs
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F for 3 minutes. Set a wire rack beside the breading station.
  2. Separate onion slices into sturdy rings and blot the surfaces dry.
  3. Mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, half the salt and pepper. Whisk eggs with milk. Mix panko, Parmesan and remaining salt.
  4. Coat each ring in flour, then egg, then panko. Press crumbs firmly onto both sides and rest on the rack for 5 minutes.
  5. Mist both sides with oil. Arrange in one layer and cook 5 minutes, turn gently, mist dry spots and cook 3 to 5 minutes more.
  6. Remove when deeply golden and the onion is tender. Season lightly while hot.

Notes

  • Read relevant ingredient labels and the manual for any appliance used.
  • Begin checking at the early end of the time range.
  • Cool and refrigerate leftovers promptly; reheat only the amount you plan to serve so the coating is not repeatedly softened.
